Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Australia just wrapped earlier this month and the future of fashion Down Under has never looked brighter – literally. Other than the staple street-inspired, cool city girl clothes (an Aussie signature), the runway was lit up this season with a stunning display of brilliant tropical shades. As a huge fan of everything colourful and bright, I am not complaining at all (more is indeed more in this case). The popping visual fest aside, another thing that struck me about Australian designer labels are their very curious (in a good way) names. I mean, how awesome is a name like Bless’ed Are The Meek? I know – a rose by any other name will smell as sweet, but for me, that creative, tongue-in-cheek name is the cherry on the top of the cake.

Here are just some of the bright young brands that showed in Sydney a fortnight ago, which have caught our eyes and hearts.

AN ODE TO NO ONE

Adi, the designer of Sydney-based label An Ode To No One made one of the most unlikely career transition one can imagined: from criminology to fashion design. His diverse training must have been an interesting influence on his aesthetic and his clothes are fast becoming known for their “meticulous detail, exceptional quality and unprecedented inventiveness”. For Spring/Summer 2012, he sent out an elegant and modern collection that is based on a muted neutral palette, which renders his indulgent splashes of orange and turquoise that much more outstanding.

FLOWERS FOR A VAGABOND

Growing up in a remote area can do wonders in inspiring creativity, especially when the place in question is the beautiful Merino Stud, New South Wales deep in the harsh Australian outback. Designer Toby Maclean of Flowers For A Vagabond is a case in point. Advocating an unique, avant garde style, he has been busy traipsing across the global fashion stage since graduating from fashion school in 2006. Having launched his signature label in 2010, he is widely lauded to be the ‘one to watch’ in the Australian fashion scene. His Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Desirable Darkness, not only features arresting shades like yellow and fuschia, but is also positively iridescent with his bold use of shiny, reflective fringes.

ROMANCE WAS BORN

If you are expecting Romance Was Born to be feminine and ethereal (i.e. conventional symbolisms of ‘romance’), you cannot be more wrong. Loud and theatrical, design duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales take their fashion shows very literally indeed, turning them into episodes in fashion wonderland and stunning their audience with their unmistakeable flamboyant, embellished style. For Spring/Summer 2012, they did not make an exception. Transforming the venue into a larger-than-life playground for superheros (complete with a gigantic paper pop-up set straight out of a Marvel comic book), the models strutted out in outfits that are inspired by the superhuman power of colours and the classic graphic style of Marvel comics. It is destined to make a statement with fans of both comics and fashion.

1. What inspired you to start your own online store? Can you tell us more about yourself?

The desire to express my individual style. I chose an online store as the retailing platform because I enjoy shopping online for its convenience and it is also an avenue to reach potential customers worldwide. I was born, raised and educated in Singapore. I was in the accounting profession before I started my own business. I love coffee, a daily staple in my life. I like taking strolls, it’s a form of relaxation for me.

2. What are the struggles you faced since you started your online store?

There are constant challenges in the business world. This is mostly contributed by the desire to excel in every area of the business. The beginning was very tough. I did not know anybody in the industry and the right contacts to get quality supplies. There were many knocks and trials.

3. What are some of your favorite places to shop in Singapore?

I love to shop at Uniqlo. They have very good quality basics that I can match with blouses or outer wear from my online store.

4. In your opinion, which are the best countries for shopping?

Right here in Singapore! The retail front in Singapore is becoming very exciting and blooming with the introduction of many unique, inspiring and independent local designers.

5. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I adore classic and simplicity with clever integration of current trends.

6. What other plans do you have for online store?

I desire to materialise my designs, carry my own brand and to expand the variety of products.

7. What are your thoughts on Singapore being one of the most fashionable cities?

Do you not agree? I think we are doing very well in expressing our own style. Look at the fashion street snapshots and you will see very unique individual styles. If you ask me on any areas of improvement, please keep the flip flops within home and neighbourhood compound. Footwear plays a very important part on the overall attire image.

8. Do you have any advice for aspiring online store owners?

Love what you do, do what you love. Find your passion and pursue.

Yesterday in 1935, Luciano Benetton was born. Along with his two brothers and one sister, Luciano founded the Benetton group, which produces the United Colours of Benetton.

As a salesman Luciano saw a market for colourful clothes, and sold his younger brother’s bicycle in order to buy his first second-hand knitting machine.

Today, Benetton is known for both its bold colours and its controversial campaigns. For this look, we draw from the vibrant palette of Benetton’s SS12 collection.

But it is to the benefit of all stylish men that they met because their label, now in its second collection, makes the kind of beautifully constructed, classic gentleman footwear that will last for a long, long time. Claiming to be “shoes fanatics first and foremost, retailers next”, the duo strives to provide the full range of shoes (one pair for every occasion) that should be found in every man’s wardrobe. The result: shoes that even women will love to wear.

Having started his eponymous label at the tender age of just 19, it is remarkable how far Benson Chen has came since he made his first pair of shoes when he was 17 years old. Alrady touted to be the next Jimmy Choo, he specialises in architecturally challenging and sculptural sky-scraper heels that are designed to make women’s legs look as long as possible. Having showed at Malaysia fashion week and with a number of prestigious awards under his belt (including Most Creative Design In Malaysia Footwear), Chen’s style is mostly associated with the glitz and glamour of eveningwear. Having already collaborated with a number of international designers, we wait with bated breath to see what this talented young designer will be up to next.

Hello, my name is Amanda, I’m 23 this year. Graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts, majored in Fashion Communications. I’m a dreamer, I’m always drifting off, lost in my own thoughts. Things that I like are coffee, movies, music, books, museums, night- time and long bus rides.

2. As a blogger, what do you usually blog about?

I have currently stop blogging due to my busy work schedule, but I used to blog about mostly on fashion related, about anything that caught my eye like runway trends, bags and shoes that I like and lastly, outfit photos of myself. 3. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

My personal style defines my character of how I am. I’m of a pants to skirts person as I’m pretty tom boyish. Sometimes my friends say I dress like a boy as I like wearing blazers and pants. I’m also often dressed in loose fitting clothes as I believe in dressing comfortably, and wearing loose fitting clothes means I can eat all I want without showing a tummy!

4. What are your favorite places to shop at in Singapore?

My favorite places to shop currently is at Exhibit, Far East Plaza. I spent like almost half of my pay there which is
really terrible ;( I like local designers as well like Saturday, Young & Restless and brands from Blackmarket.

5. In your opinion, which countries are the best for shopping?

I like shopping at London as they have a wide range of styles from high end designers brands, to high street fashion and lastly vintage clothing at their flea markets. It’s really a shopping heaven there!

6. Who are some of your favorite designers?

Tomorrow in 1932, celebrated designer Valentino Garavani was born in Lombarday, Italy. Valentino founded his eponymous house in 1959.

In 2008, Valentino officially retired with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli taking over at the helm. That year, Valentino also showed his last menswear collection in a runway show for SS08.

This year, the House of Valentino showed its first menswear collection on the runway since Valentino’s retirement for FW12. But we look back at the SS08 show, drawing inspiration from the designer’s own take on an Italian spring.

1. Reckless Ericka was started by a trio, what inspired you guys to start a label?

Starting a label was part of our dreams and it felt right at that moment in early 2009. We were then presented a wonderful chance to showcase alongside 3 international designers (Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood & Gareth Pugh) during the Audi Fashion Festival Singapore in May 2009, as part of the Blueprint featuring Blackmarket fashion show. It was a great platform and gave us a great jump start.

As for our label’s name, we are inspired by a fictional character, Ericka, from a book by Paul Arden called “Whatever you think, think the opposite”. In the short story, Ericka is very free-spirited, not afraid to be wrong, and we would like to capture that in our designs. Undaunted by boundaries and unfazed by risks ahead, Ericka does what feels recklessly right.

2. With 2 stores at Orchard Central and Vivo City, what is your most memorable experience since the start of your label?

Every step of the way has been interesting and unforgettable, but the most memorable experience has to be opening our 2nd outlet at Vivocity within a year of opening our 1st outlet in Orchard Central.

3. Which are the designers, local and international that you look up to?

Nic Wong from Nicholas & Saturday. He’s one of our mentors and we are grateful for him guiding us along the way.

I love Vivienne Westwood’s vivaciousness and radical styles that seek to challenge any forms and notions. Her fantastically opulent designs and imaginative mashing together of performance art and high fashion astounds and inspires me.

4. I have seen many celebrities in Reckless Ericka, what are the celebrities you wish will be wearing Reckless Ericka?

5. What are the future plans of your label?

For 2012, we have plans to venture overseas by joining tradeshows.

6. If you can be a superhero, what will it be?

Having an ability to teleport would be great!

I am a fresh diploma graduate from Temesek Polytechnic, Apparel Design. I’m turning 22 this year. Born in China, Shanghai and have been residing in Singapore for the longest time.

2. As a blogger, what do you usually blog about?

My blog is basically a space for me to share my photos, happenings and ideas that I’ve come up with. It can be very random, cause I do not usually BLOG blog.

3. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I am never a simple person in terms of dressing. So it will be a little difficult for me to describe my style in words. Basically I love colours and interesting details. My tolerance to the hot climate is super low, so the weather restrict me a lot to what I wear everyday.

4. What are your favorite places to shop at in Singapore?

Singapore is very small and ironically there are too many mega shopping malls. I cant even remember what was the last time i bought something nice in Singapore. I just love online shopping.

5. In your opinion, which countries are the best for shopping?

I haven’t been to many countries , so whatever I say may not be reliable. From my own shopping experience across asia, MY personal favourite still gotta be Shanghai! Cause everything is so cheap there! I love the feeling of spending only a few hundred dollars and you could fill up half your wardrobe.

6. Who are some of your favorite designers?

There are TOO MANY UPCOMING TALENTED DESIGNERS , it will be a huge list if I were to name them. AT this very second, the names that comes to mind is Mary Katrantzou and Louise Gray.

7. Besides modelling, what other projects are you working on now?

Other than freelance styling and modelling, I also work on my own designs at home.

8. Last question, if you can be a superhero, who will you be?

My knowledge of superheroes is quite shallow, I’m gonna say I would be wonder woman, auses her outfit is amazing and sexy!

Today in 1958, pop artist Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. A pop culture icon, Haring has influenced numerous designers and even designed a jacket worn by Madonna for a performance of her song “Like a Virgin” on TV.

1. What inspired you to start your own jewellery line? Can you tell us more about your background?

In 2008, after five years as the Managing Director of an international advertising agency, I decided to take a year off the corporate race to travel. I met a very talented silversmith in Florence who taught me how to hand craft silver jewellery. I fell in love with silversmithing after I made my first ring silversmith and I knew I wanted to be a silversmith and jewellery designer. So Carrie K. Artisan Jewellery was born in July 2009.

Starting my journey as a silversmith in Florence has had a great influence in our approach to how we pour our passion and attention to detail when handcrafting each piece of Carrie K. jewellery.

2. What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

My two latest collections are from the Veritas by Carrie K. line, which is Carrie K’s statement designer jewellery line, that re-interprets tradition and re-imagines everyday objects in a tongue-in-cheek way. This line features statement jewellery using unusual production techniques in order to create designs that are fresh and unexpected.

The Heavy Mettle Collection is about inner strength and not judging a book by its cover. It features statement lattice-worked, leather accessories treated to look like it is made of metal.
The Gender Bender Collection rejects preconceived notions of gender roles. It reworks things associated with one gender to suit the other gender as well. For example, the all-too-familiar bow tie is re-invented in sterling silver for both men and women. Made using a new technique, it is unexpectedly featherweight.

3. Who are some of your favorite jewellery designers?

I’ve always admired Elsa Peretti and the work that she’s done for Tiffany’s. Her designs feel contemporary and relevant so many years after she created them. I have some of her pieces, which I love. The other is fine jewellery designer, Solange Azury Partridge, as there are few fine jewellery designers whose pieces ooze such personality and a wicked sense of humour.

4. In your opinion, what is a must-have piece of jewellery that everyone has to own?

A statement neck- piece and cuff is always essential. The necklace and long cuff from the Heavy Mettle collection by Veritas by Carrie K. (Image 1&2), can immediately spice up a simple outfit. The pieces are also reversible, allowing for multiple ways of wearing them. I love stacking jewellery, so many of the Carrie K. rings are designed to be stacked. For example, rings (Image 6) from my Odyssey and Raw collections can be worn alone or stacked together for simplicity or to make a statement. Finally, I think that hoops are a must-have. I wear our Egyptian Hoop Earrings in yellow gold (Image 7) all the time as it can take me from the office all the way to dinner after work.

5. What are the greatest memories since the start of your label?

- The opening of the Carrie K. Atelier was very momentous for me.
- Being handpicked by Yuji Yamamoto to be a part of his multi label concept store in Japan, as it not only marked Carrie K’s overseas debut, but being selected by someone of Yuji’s stature and experience in the fashion industry is really encouraging.
- Carrie K’s pieces being featured on Project Runway Korea last week. It was really exciting to see my pieces styled by such talented up and coming designers.

6. What about the struggles you faced?

I think that you will face challenges in whatever that you do. At Carrie K. we
look for gaps in the market be it products or services. For example, before I started silversmithing, I always looked for designs like this that are more raw and not so perfect but it was very hard to find. So when I started to silversmith, I made jewellery that is purposely raw, unpolished designing jewellery that made imperfection desirable and that has become the signature Carrie K. style.

7. Can you tell us more about your personal style? What are some of your favorite brands?

My style is very eclectic; from clean-cut lines of Calvin Klein, to androgynous tuxedos and Dries Van Noten for their bold and colourful yet elegant pieces.

8. Singapore was recently named one of the most fashionable cities, in your opinion, do you think we got there yet?

I think that Singapore is more a shopping capital than a fashion capital. But we’re heading in the right direction with the growing pool of talented fashion designers and an appreciation for emerging designers.

9. Are we allowed a sneak peak of your next collection?

We’re still working on the new collection and we’ll definitely let you know when we have something that we can share.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?

Do what you’re passionate about and you’ll feel like you’ve never had to work a day in your life.

1. How and why did you girls started fashion blogging?

Arissa: We started monoxious.com in May 2009. We’ve previously had our own blogs found them to be too personal and unfocused in its contents. Being passionate about fashion, we decided to start a blog that was more focused on fashion instead.

2. Can you tell us a little more about yourselves?

Dawn: We are rather nondescript, I think. Perhaps just a tad more obsessed with shoes than most, and the both of us spend way too much time on the internet.

3. What do you usually blog about?

Arissa: Fashion, DIYs and Outfits. We occasionally throw in a few makeup and hair tutorials.

4. With more than one blogger, how do you divide up the workload for the blog?

Dawn: It all depends on who has more work to do outside of blogging. Arissa blogs more when I am studying for tests or rushing an assignment, and I try to blog more often when she is busy with work.

5. What are the most memorable experiences since the start of your blog?

Arissa: There are a few things we would consider milestones:

Being nominated for Best Fashion blog for the Nuffnang awards in 2009 when our blog was only 5 months old.
A blogger feature in the inaugural issue of Vogue Girl Japan.
Our first trip together in London which later spanned to Paris, London(again) and Amsterdam
Our current blog layout which to be honest, took up more time, effort and money than it looks.
Getting recognised by people when out shopping in NYC and Singapore.
Every single comment that we get because we know how much effort it takes to comment on blog posts and we really thank readers for their time.

6. Are there any bloggers that you look up to?

Some of the blogs that we love are: Park & Cube, Luxirare, Honestly WTF, indecorous taste

7. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I guess our style can’t exactly be pinpointed? It’s always changing but the only constant is that we tend to favor dressing up in black although Dawn is impartial to neutrals and reds as well. We really love awesome shoes.

8. What are the future plans for Monoxious?

Dawn: The only solid plan we have so far is to get a shop page up! Other than that, we just plan to keep posting and see what the future brings us.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

Dawn: Update constantly and don’t give up if when you encounter problems. Perseverance and hard work do pay off some day.

1. A Macbook Named Mao

Yes, I have decamped Alienware and adopted the Macbook Air. Actually, I’ve adopted a whole Apple family with an iPhone, an iPad AND a Macbook Air – all with matching cases.

And yes, I have also named my Air Mao, as per my tradition of naming my devices like little lost children.

My defense? Fashion demands: the fabric on my sports jackets can only take so much wear from the straps of my big ‘ol Le Pliage from Longchamp.

I am alas a rag hustler, peddling my wares to various merchants about town.

2. Wanderwonder Bronze Sports Jacket

As you might know by now, I am obsessed with all things shiny – and this jacket is the ne plus ultra of a sumptuous, sexy colour.

Light as a feather, this piece – designed by the friends of FS at Wanderwonder – is a joyful addition to a summer wardrobe.

3. Sifr Orange Poncho

If you thought fashion advertising didn’t work, think again.

Who ever thought I would need a bright orange poncho? This ad did, and I agreed. We do live in the tropics, after all.

The completist in me is dying to pick up the blue and black ones as well, but my credit card company assures me that one will suffice.

4. Mils Jumpsuit

I have been fixed on the idea of a men’s jumpsuit for a year, people. A whole year.

Watching Bill Cunningham New York didn’t help either. Do you realise how close I was to picking up a smock a la Cunningham while in Paris?

Something about the utilitarian nature of jumpsuits just fascinates me. How many hours a year would I save if I went exclusively jumpsuit? It’s the male equivalent of a one-piece dress – it goes on and you’re out the door.

Not surprisingly, it was super chic in the Bauhaus school and with the Futurist set. Today, not so much.

The pang almost passed until I saw this baby on the PARCO next NEXT show floor.

Haven’t met the designer for Mils yet, but this jumpsuit tells me that we will definitely get along.

5. Fashion Friends

Lastly, I endorse fashion friends. There are friends, and there are fashion friends – the ones with which you can wax poetic about the latest issue of Vogue Italia, who will sympathise with your buying the same pair of shoes in different colours.

Also, I endorse Gossip Girl – and Revenge, but mostly because of Josh Bowman.

1. What inspired you to start a jewellery collection? Can you tell us
more about your background? 

I was originally a journalist at Dow Jones News Service, the Wall Street Journal, CNN and People.com. Then I was the managing editor of websites at the now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers. I figured I’d save money from that job and either go back to journalism with healthy retirement savings or do something entrepreneurial.  I had designed my own engagement and wedding rings in 2001, with the help of woman in the diamond business. I kept going back to her to make other little things for me. In 2004, I asked her to do another piece and as we were discussing it, I spontaneously asked her, “Would you want to sell that design together?” I left Lehman in 2005 to start a jewelry business with her. She died in 2006 and I continued on my own. I started the blog in 2007 to promote my jewelry line.

2. What is your inspiration behind your latest jewellery collection?

Notable women of history — and a few notable women in my life!

3. What do you do when you get stumped for inspiration?

Right now, I have more design ideas than I can afford to do. Ask me again after I do those.

4. What are the greatest memories since the start of your line?

This January, I won Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award for fine jewelry.

5. What are some of your favorite jewellery brands?

Taffin and JAR.

6. Can you tell us more about your personal style? 

Eclectic. I like clean, modern shapes, but I also collect flowing vintage dresses by ’60s and ’70s designer Ossie Clark.

7. Who are some jewellery designers you look up to?

I respect the business David Yurman built. It’s especially impressive because there was so much resistance to his idea of combining silver and diamonds.

8. Can we have a sneak peak at your next collection?

All I’ll say is there will be a lot of tsavorite, which is a green garnet and one of my favorite gems.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?

It will be the most difficult thing you’ve ever done. Don’t give up!

I write mostly about fashion, events, runway trends and celebrity style. I also review beauty products such as skincare, makeup and fragrances with occasional instructional videos. Watch my videos on my YouTube channel, Fash-Eccentric TV and you’ll know what I mean.

3. What are you thoughts on blogs? Do you think they will overtake traditional media?

Blogs and traditional media are like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Same, same but different. Both mediums talk about the same topics in a different way. Blogs tend to be personal, raw and honest without the constraints of the traditional red tape. I don’t think blogs will eliminate traditional media because ultimately, we still read magazines for the glossy editorial pages and well-researched articles.

4. What are some of your favorite blogs?

My recent favourite blogs are Into The Gloss by Emily Weiss and FrouFrouu by Nadia Sarwar.

5. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

Comfort is KEY – that’s why you don’t see me in heels very often. I believe you can be stylish without compromising comfort. I love to wear colours and stripes with a hint of androgyny. Most of the time, I’m just pure lazy.

6. What do you think is a must have beauty product every girl should own?

I can’t live without my lipstick. I don’t wear heavy makeup but lipstick can instantly brighten up your face.

7. What are your greatest memories since you started blogging?

Meeting Christopher Bailey at Burberry ION Orchard store opening in 2009. Recently, I was invited to Tokyo to visit Japanese lifestyle label, Francfranc and interviewed Mr. Fumio Takashima, CEO in person. Personally, it was a rewarding experience.

8. How do you juggle the time between work and blogging?

Set an hour or two everyday for blogging. All you need is passion and discipline.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers out there?

Have a keen eye and passion for fashion. Be diligent. Don’t quit.

Known for his personal and eclectic sense of style, American actor Johnny Depp will be honored with the Fashion Icon Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Depp will be the first male recipient to be presented the CFDA Fashion Awards in the category.

There is no questioning the badass attitude of the actor when it comes to making fashion statements; he shops vintage and express his personality ( or personalities?) through his wardrobe and is seen often borrowing elements from friends such Rolling Stone’s Keith Richards and goth rocker Marilyn Manson. And even off-screen, he’s also presented himself as an Edwardian dandy, a rock star, a pirate, a cowboy, a French gangster, with clothing and accessories seeming to mimic that of his latest onscreen persona. And for that, and for his ability to pull off eccentricity with a too-cool-to-care ‘tude, we love him so.

Kanye West

He who can’t be ignored. From making a spectacle of himself in That Taylor Swift Incident, to allegedly dating Kim “baby-got-back” Kardashian, it’s a wonder Mr West has any time at all. On top of making money from making music, he also has its own luxe clothing line, which, last fashion week, was shown in Paris in the same space Alber Elbaz used to celebrate a decade at Lanvin a few days earlier. As for his personal style – he’s got swagger and he’s got his loyal band of followers: shutter shades by Alain Mikli took the world by storm after he wore them, he rocks them fur coats with limited edition high tops and let’s not forget when he wore a Celine women’s blouse to perform at Coachella Festival in 2011. He’s not afraid to mix it up, luxe it up, and them ham it up for all the cameras.

Don Draper

Fine, Don Draper doesn’t really exist in our world, but you have to admit, he’s a pretty fine dresser. He makes us long for the past. Though, it’s a past that’s given us ripe age, we can’t actually recall from firsthand experience. In fact, until recently, we could only see it through white-edged, sepia-toned pictures that further yellowed with age in the acetate pages of a haphazardly organized family photo album. They evoke a time when men dressed like men: perfectly tailored suits, freshly starched shirts and spit-shined shoes. Sometimes we think we’re reveling in a fantasy world that never actually existed, but then again, we have pictorial evidence of our grandfathers to prove it did. It’s a f*ck you to track suits, and down-your-bum jeans, and flip flops and pleated khakis. And for that, he’s on our list.

Michael Bastian

He may not be a household name, but it’s only time between him, and global domination. The New Yorker was voted CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Menswear Designer of the Year last year and his recent collabos with GANT and sunglasses brand Randolph Engineering also seem to suggest that the debonair American is venturing into popular fashion culture. His personal style oozes laissez faire, with just a hint of tailored elegance. There is effortlessness to the way Bastian carries himself, and his outfit decisions and sense of dress seem to reflect that.

Ryan Gosling

The obvious reason to deny that Mr Ryan Gosling is currently the most stylish man in Hollywood is jealousy, brought on by the look women get in their eyes when his name is mentioned. From the tuxedos he wears on the catwalk to the scorpion bomber jacket from Drive and the navy shirt he wore at Cannes last year, Mr Gosling is currently setting the sartorial pace. And we’re trailing right behind. Trying not to check out his booty.

The double-breasted suit is officially back. Once relegated to European patriarchs and mobsters (sometimes the distinction escapes us), the double-breasted jacket is now an insider nod. With paired-down suits now in abundance, this distinguished take is the province of the new dandy. 1. What inspired you to start a line of your own? Can you tell us a little background about yourself?

The idea of making something with my own bare hands have always intrigued me. So i think it comes naturally when i find myself with a set of daddy’s pliers and a store at Arab Street selling beads and craft supplies, that i figured out, with the help of the bead shop owners, on how to make my very own jewellery pieces.

I didn’t have any training in design or fashion although i have always been interested in pretty dresses and the like. Took Chemical Engineering when i was in Temasek Polytechnic and quite enjoyed it actually. The moment came when i knew i had to change my career path, the moment was when i had to do training at Jurong Island. A blue jumpsuit is seriously not my style.

I started crafting when i was about 16 to 17 years old. Continued this hobby and sold some of my crafts on blogshops (they were big back then) until i was about 19. I was part-timing at The Asylum Shop and met these great designers who did BRANDING. What was branding? Came to learn more about it and under the encouragement of a friend, now my boyfriend, I started to do up my label and got my shit together (excuse my language).

At 19 though, i was studying New Media and Communications at NUS and was also part-timing. So juggling 3 jobs wasn’t making my label progress any faster. When i officially graduated last year May (HOORAY!), i went full-time and never looked back since.

2. What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

We don’t really work with collections, more of series as this works better for us.
We have collections once or twice a year for special occasions or collaborations.

We are now cooking up something for the 2nd half of the year that involve small animal bones, feathers and metallic beetle wings. For now, that is all i can say but i will keep you updated!

3. How does your designing process work?

As i;m not designed trained nor can i draw very well, i work very differently from most designers.
I get very inspired by materials, their texture, their shape and weight. From there is work on my first piece and then the first piece will inspire the next.

4. What are the struggles you faced since the start of your label?

For us, as we aren’t born with silver spoons in our mouths, we face a lot of financial constrains. But i guess with every constrain, there will be a way to work around it.
Also because i started out very young, many people who came to know about it wasn’t taking it too seriously. People now still cannot believe that i am not looking for a ‘proper’ job after i graduated and thinks that this is a plaything. Well, i hope one day i will prove them wrong.

5. Who are your favorite jewellery designers?

I love the sisters behind Dannijo. Their story is also inspiring because they are chasing their dreams and have been giving back to society at the same time with their charities.

6. What do you think is a must have jewellery everyone should own?

A necklace. If you can’t tell, i love to make necklaces. They are so easy to put on, match and are fuss free. Rings are gorgeous and stylish, but they are also meddlesome. I like things fuss free.

7. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I like colors, but recently i reorganized my wardrobe and found more black and white pieces than coloured ones. I guess i like clothes that are timeless. I don’t really do trends, like the very printed tops and pants we see now in Spring/Summer 2012. They’re pretty but i’m not so sure about wearing them ALL THE TIME. People can get bored with trendy pieces and when they aren’t trendy anymore, i tend to chuck them aside.

8. Do you have any advice to aspiring designers?

Keep your passion strong and always remind yourself why you do what you do in the first place.
If you’re not happy with it, don’t sell it.

1. Can you tell us more about yourself? Why did you start blogging?

I’m Winnie, I’m 25 and I live in the UK however currently I’m working in Hong Kong for a few months which has been a lovely change of scenery!

I can’t remember how I came across my first blog but I do remember reading Style Bubble and Flying Saucer religiously and in 2008, I decided to set up my own little space on the internet where I could be creative and document my life. Most importantly, it was a space I could share my interest for fashion with people who were the same as me! I didn’t expect to be still writing my blog after so long but the interactive nature of blogging is really encouraging.

2. Do you blog full time? If you don’t, how do you balance your time between blogging and working?

No, I don’t blog full time. I’ve always been blogging alongside being a student or work and I have no plans on turning the blog into a full time job. I usually blog a few times a week after I come home and spend about an hour every day catching up on what other fellow bloggers have been up to. Some people read lots of magazines and watch TV after work but I spend a lot of time reading blogs!

3. What do you think about the fashion blogging scene? Do you think blogging will overtake print media?

Generally, I think fashion blogging is a really positive thing. I love the interactive nature and seeing how fashion works on real people. It certainly has been a fantastic opportunity and despite not all of the media is fully embracing bloggers, I think there is definitely a place for bloggers.
I don’t think print media will ever be overtaken. As a blogger, I still adore magazines and there is something special about buying your own copy and flicking through the glossy pages with a cup of tea.

4. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

Most of the time I’m in dresses and skirts because I find it difficult to get good fit trousers/jeans for my height. If I’m shopping, I’ll naturally gravitate towards anything with an interesting collar, print or basic items in block colours.

5. Who are your favorite designers?

Some of my favourite designers include Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, Hussein Chalayan who are all unique, push boundaries and often conceptual in design. I think that sometimes it’s hard not to look a their collections as works of Art.

6. Do you have any style icons, if so, who are they?

I really like following Japanese fashion and Miliyah Kato has some pretty amazing style and I always look forward to finding her regular feature in my favourite Japanese magazine, ViVi. Otherwise, I often get inspired by all the blogs that I read on a regular basis.

7. In your opinion, what are the best countries to go for shopping?

I actually think the UK is pretty awesome, especially since it’s famed for it’s high street shopping. However, I think Asia is pretty good too, especially Hong Kong where if you look in the right places, there are plenty of places where you can do some serious shopping!

8. What are some of your favorite brands?

I like easily accessible fashion so in the UK I really like COS, River Island, Zara where I can always find awesome prints and great cuts. In HK, I spend forever looking in I.T, Izzue and you can always find some interesting pieces in Bauhaus.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?

I say go for it! By starting a blog you have nothing to lose and it’s a pretty great place to share creative ideas with like minded people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself, blog for the right reasons (not for fame or freebies) and you’ll do pretty well. A good camera (not necessarily an SLR) will also help attract readers!

SPENCER HART

Every man should have a good suit and those made by Spencer Hart are probably as good as they come. This relatively young label (established in 2002) is concerned with “constructing a manifesto of menswear cool”. While this may sound ambitious, it seems like designer Nick Hart has managed to pull it off, and with panache. His signature pared down, modern tailoring and refined use of details, colours and textures have won him fans galore, including Hollywood celebrities. His clothes has often been seen on the red carpets of the Oscars and Golden Globes and the stylish stars seen in them include the likes of P Diddy, John Legend and Kate Bosworth (yes, you heard right).

MCM

Granted, Germany may not be a tradition powerhouse of luxury fashion, but they certainly are known for their almost obsessive dedication to quality and craftsmanship. The art of travel and the spirit of adventure are at the heart of MCM (Mode Creation Munich), which offers luxury leather accessories, apparel and footwear to seasoned travellers who understand the comfort and convenience that a well-made suitcase can bring while on a journey. Known for its iconic German-engineered functionality and timelessly elegant designs, the appointment of Korean superstar Rain as brand ambassador is undoubtedly a progressive move by this heritage-minded brand.

BEYOND CLOSET

Korean menswear has remained a more or less untapped sartorial goldmine for foreigners, so Men’s Fashion Week’s introduction of labels like Beyond Closet to the local fashion scene should be cheered. Based on the idea of “reconstructing classics with wit for the unique individual”, Beyond Closet’s fun and quirky smart-casual aesthetic is designed to appeal to men in their twenties and thirties. With the understanding that menswear should always be practical, designer Tae Yong has reinterpreted the classics with unconventional details, bold use of prints and experimentation with fit, cut and lengths. The result is a laid-back but sophisticated street-chic for indigenous city dwellers.

JUN HASHIMOTO

Despite the liberal use of colours and fashion-forward approach to design, there is nothing dandy-ish about Japanese menswear label Jun Hashimoto. Instead, there is an intriguing rugged-meet-polished vibe to the clothes that will no doubt appeal to the manly man who also wants to dress well. In addition to mixing preppy knit sweaters with well-cut blazers and edgy leather jackets, luxurious fur has also been used to line collars and cuffs, a blatant display of opulence rarely seen in menswear. On top of all these, the looks remind utterly wearable and very smart. This is definitely not fashion for fashion’s sake.

RESURRECTION

Resurrection by Parson’s graduate Juyoung Lee has a curious source of inspiration for her line – early Christian art from the 3rd to 7th centuries. Having embraced Antiquity, Roman and Byzantine art, it naturally follows that her clothes and accessories are ornate and richly decorated. Placing these within the context of contemporary menswear, the resulting pieces are edgy and surprisingly futuristic. While pink leopard-print cardigans and see-through nylon windbreakers may not be for everyone, for those discerning and brave enough to give them a go, these clothes are a surefire way to distinguish yourself from the crowd.

Anna Dello Russo

Oh, Anna, where do we even begin to start dishing about you? The ultimate style stuntwoman worked on Vogue Italia for 18 years before editing L’Uomo Vogue between 2000 and 2006. She is now editor-at-large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan. While she has always been famous in fashion circles, she propelled to fame with her quirkier-than-thou outfits that she dons and catches the eye of street style photographers at fashion weeks all over the world. At the recent hoopla Mrs Beckham threw at Harvey Nicks’ FW 2012 collection, ADR had on a headband that looked like an Afro of silver bubbles. With a veil. At the Marni show in Milan she wore a Balenciaga wimple and she was the first to be seen wearing a pair of Prada’s much-coveted “flame” shoes from this season’s 1950s super kitschy collection.

Have we mentioned Dello Russo has another 4,000 pairs at home? And for all of that, and her absolutely zany website (http://www.annadellorusso.com/) that looks like skittles on crack, we love her so.

Rihanna

Besides the fact that I have a girly crush on Rihanna, it is evident that she is a style star. She may not be wearing carcass, or dying her hair a shade of smurf (though she did rock a Ronald McDonald shade for a bit), Rihanna’s style has evolved with her music and we’re always twiddling our thumbs wondering what she’s gonna be up to next.

Elizabeth Olsen

It’s no surprise when fashion moves their focus to someone younger, but perhaps fashion’s focus’ move from the twins to the younger sister of the Olsens might not just entirely be because of her age. The family resemblance is evident—the Olsen sisters share their wide, curious eyes, full lips and heart-shaped face—but in terms of personal style, it was clear very early on that Elizabeth would have to put in some extra work to differentiate herself from her older sisters’ signature boho/hobo look.

And she did – she set tongues wagging when she first made appearance in the spotlight at Cannes for her new film Martha Marcy May Marlene, and film critics soon followed suit, praising her for her outstanding acting chops portraying a haunted cult escapee. An festival of publicity ensued; was named V Magazine’s “New Ingenue,” posed for a spread in W Magazine, and graced the cover of Nylon’s “It Girl Issue”, amongst others. We love her girly style, and that she’s still discovering style, which is very refreshing.

We also gotta admit that we love the fact that this Olsen girl doesn’t look like she stole a homeless man’s clothes.

Taylor Tomasi Hill

Another street style blog darling, Taylor Tomasi Hill may look like a model, but she’s not just a pretty face. The statuesque stunner is currently the Accessories Director of Marie Claire US and she was the former accessories editor of Teen Vogue. On top of her busy editorial schedule, Taylor is also the creative consultant for Sigerson Morrison and TheRunThrough.com, a website by Meggan Crum and Mandy Tang that will revolutionize the way editors work. She’s also currently creating a collection with Lane Crawford’s fashion director, Sarah Rutson, slated to hit shelves in January. Let’s just say this girl works hard for her money!

Olivia Palermo

It’s hard not to do a double-take when you see Palermo. Not only does she have a ton of paps in her face since she played the Mean Girl in MTV’s The City, her modelesque figure, her perfectly polished togs and her man candy makes her one of New York City’s faces to watch. Palermo has an incredible knack of looking like the perfect amalgation of styles from NYC and Paris, and she makes it look so effortless. Girl’s got swag.

1. What inspired you to get into the hair tattoo line?

I love hair tattoos and saw a lack of it in Singapore.  I saw myself as an artist when razor blading the hair to form the patterns. It’s the closest I’ve ever been with art when working my art on my clients.

2. Can you tell us a little about your background?

I’m still a student in SIM – RMIT, finishing my final semester, and am also a freelance barber during my free time.

3. So far, what are your most memorable experiences?

A hair tattoo for a 5 year old boy. He requested for it!

4. Can you tell us more about hair tattoos? Do you need to take a course to learn how to do hair tattoos?

Hair tattoos are done by shaving away parts of the hair to form patterns with the shaven part, or what is left, negative and positive spaces. There’s no courses in Singapore so far to learn how to do hair tattoos, and I’m self taught.

5. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I love to make people smile.

6. What other projects are you working on?

Collective barbering. It’s under “heist” – www.facebook.com/heistcommitted and we plan to bring back classic barbering, and let people know what barbering is really about.

7. Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to start doing hair tattoos?

Draw more, be confident, and find some really supportive guinea pigs

1. Can you tell us more about yourself? What inspired you to start fashion blogging?

Rock The Trend was founded in 2007, about half a year before my ‘O’ levels. I was weird amongst my sportier peers because I started reading VOGUE back then and once I got my head into all these stuff it’s only natural to set up a blog.

2. What do you usually blog about?

I write about the insider side of fashion, going a layer deeper besides talking about what’s pretty or what’s cool on the surface. I have a crazy obsession about photographers, magazines and models and a Tim Walker editorial makes me more excited than anything actually. Sometimes I write about clothes and occasionally reporting on events I go to.

3. What are the best memories since the start of your blog?

The best memory goes to New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012, sitting front row at DKNY three seats away from Anna Dello Russo and partying with Solange Knowles at the Mulberry 40th Anniversary rooftop party. Plus many many other ridiculously unbelievably great things that happened.

4. As you are working now, how do you manage the time between the blog and your work?

I always managed to find time to write somehow no matter who busy the day is. Maybe because I don’t actually write a lot, and I get inspired pretty easily.

5. Who are some of the bloggers you look up to?

I like Amy Odell, who’s from The Cut previously and now at Buzzfeed. She’s sharp, witty and writes intelligently. Also, Janelle Okwodu who writes for models.com and Sans Artifice. I am regular reader of Popbee and Fashion Gone Rogue too.

6. What do you think about the fashion blogging scene in Singapore?

I think it’s really small, everyone knows everyone. When I was at New York Fashion Week I can sense that the blogging scene there is really huge and really different from us!

7. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I am not very adventurous with my dressing… but even if I get very lazy I try not to dress sloppily. I think smart-casual is the word, always tuck in the shirt or blouse even though my waist is not exactly small and I wear clothes that flatter my body shape and make me look my age.

8. What do you think is a must have item in anyone’s wardrobe?

A good pair of shoes that can bring you from day to night.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

Be passionate, be unique and be yourself.

This is definitely not for the faint-hearted. To avoid going over-the-top, keep the ensemble more glamourous than tacky by letting the sequinned dress take center-stage and going light on the accessories. At the center of Reckless Ericka‘s design philosophy is a youthful, adventurous heart. At the same time, it takes a Euro-centric approach to clothes making, focusing on classic tailoring and details. While this may seem paradoxical at first glance, the label has skillfully combined its fun-loving personality with age old techniques by balancing out the two opposing forces with fashion-forward use of silhouettes and colours. With draped jersey dresses for the girls and preppy outerwear for the boys, its style can be neatly summed up as “Stockholm chic”.

Like so many Southeast Asian designers, Sabrina Goh works largely with light, tropical-friendly fabrics. This is a real plus for those of us who wants to look stylish without having to melt in the sweltering heat. There is also a pleasing androgyny to Sabrina’s designs, which often feature interesting details like asymmetry, drapes and cut-outs. While she does produce great separates that can be worn everyday (but without a tinge of mundanity), it is her strong yet feminine little black dresses that I feel is her strongest suit.

The fact that Mae Pang caught the attention of quirky top fashion blogger Susie Bubble (who was in town last year for Blueprint) is a clue that her designs are not what you will call ‘regular’. There is an unmistakable sense of the future with Mae’s clothes. Her first collection, Plantasmagloria, consists of quietly dramatic and sculptural cover-ups that are to be layered over other equally eye-catching pieces. An alumni of Parco next Next, she has come a long way in the two years since her debut. From the look of her latest showing (above), I expect her to go on a lot further from here.

1. Can you tell us more about your background and how did you decide to start an online e-retailer shop?

Maisha & I are both Business graduates from the National University of Singapore. Maisha graduated with a major in both Finance & Marketing, while I graduated with a major in Marketing. Rather than taking the path of the Singapore dream, we decided to strike it out and start our own business. We were not keen on working in an office, or a bank, for that matter, as we wanted to only answer to ourselves. I have always had a love for fashion, and I’ve interned at Raoul, and worked at Topshop for a short period of time as a style advisor. When you love something so much, you should integrate it into your life.

2. What made you decide to start your shop online instead of a physical one?

We actually considered starting a physical store, but to be honest, as an entrepreneur, money is one of the key considerations. We realized that the overhead costs of starting a physical store were too high, plus we really wanted to reach out to the international market – the world is anyone’s oyster, really.

3. What are some challenges you have faced since starting the shop?

There are immense challenges we have faced, and they only made us stronger. Once you overcome one difficulty, you’ll be able to do better the next time. We started off with nothing – it was tough cutting costs and keeping within budget. We had to do everything on a shoe string, and yet create a product that is expensive. We did our own photoshoots and designed the website from scratch. With no prior working experience, we had to learn everything ourselves, from operations, to how PR is really done. The biggest challenge to date is to bring designers on board – ERIIN didn’t have a website up yet, and all we had was a business proposal and website mockups. We are so grateful to everyone who put their trust in ERIIN and decided to work with us. Any challenge can, however, be overcome with support from family and friends, which we are very lucky to have received.

4. How do you decide which brands to stock in your shop?

First and foremost, they have to be brands from Asia Pacific. Next, we take a look at the brand and their design aesthetic – we ensure that the brands we carry create designs that are contemporary, and that can last in anyone’s wardrobe. They have to be high in quality – this is one of our top criteria. ERIIN ensures that we see all the pieces we stock in person, and if any one item doesn’t meet our standards, we send it back. We believe in paying for what you receive, and we want to build the trust of our customers in ERIIN for being a provider of top-notch fashion.

5. Who are your favorite designers?

Everyone we stock, of course! We are huge fans of Desti Saint’s bags, as well as the basics by YC : Yingchu – his tanks and their fabrications are comparable to Alexander Wang, we kid you not. We own at least 2-3 pieces from his collection. Other than that, we love international designers like Lee Alexander (RIP), Philip Lim, Alex Wang, Kim Ellery, Dion Lee from Australia (our dream brand we wish to stop). We love upcoming, fresh designs, and we are open to supporting anyone who’s dedicated and hardworking!

6. You have quite a few Singapore brands stocked in your shop, what do you think of the Singapore fashion scene?

Honestly, the local fashion scene has been overrun by the blogshops. There are too many of them, and the qualities of their items are not on par with our own personal standards. The local market either believes in buying immensely cheap, discounted items, or going for the huge labels like Louis Vuttion or Chanel. It gets tiring, especially when all you find are Zara, Topshop & H&M. We believe there is a need for new blood to be injected, for more unique items, for items that actually last. We don’t believe in fast consumerism – it’s too much of a waste. Items should be versatile and wearable for more than a season.

7. What is a clothing item you think is a must have for everyone?

Can we choose more than one? Right now, we would say the ankle boot is a major must-have, and it will definitely last for more than a season, as already proven. A clean white button down, as well as the quintessential denim cut-offs (One Teaspoon is a cult brand for that, and we’re bringing them in next season.) However, jewellery that will LAST, is the key – well-made, quality accessories that you can wear even when you’re showering, they become part of who you are, and represent your personal identity.

8. What are your future plans for Eriin?

Could we keep that a secret? We wouldn’t want to let any competitors know about it, would we? But honestly, we want to be the one-stop online retail site for Asia Pacific brands. We want to build a reputation that resonates worldwide, and we want to grow until we have the capabilities to catapult or support a young designer who is fresh out of school. We want to set the trends. Big dreams that seem unattainable, but we are working our asses off to reach that goal.

9. An Eriin girl is….

Individualistic, confident, eye-catching & creative. She is a global traveller, and is always seeking out the new. She has varying identities based on her mood, and she likes discovering upcoming designers, bands, magazines. She is willing to try anything fresh, is sociable and very in tune with who she is. We would like to say Taylor Tomasi Hill mixed with Alexa Chung.

10. What advice do you have to budding retail shop owners?

Believe in yourself. Learn as much as you can. Cut costs and do everything yourself. Start from the bottom. Never give up. Be as professional as possible, be polite to everyone you meet (unless of course they’re mean to you), and never burn bridges. Always take care of your health; your body is the vessel that brings you through life. It will also be best to find someone you can trust with your life to be your partner. It would have been so much harder if we didn’t have each other.

1. How did you guys get into fashion blogging? Can you tell us a little background about yourselves?

The ONESIXTYNOTEPAD blog is an evolution of a style journal founded in 2007. We both went to Nanyang Academic of Fine Arts; Ridhwan and I met while we studied Graphic Design and Fashion Design respectively, and I moved on to pursue Fashion Communication at La Salle College of the Arts shortly after that.

2. What do you guys usually blog about?

ONESIXTYNOTEPAD covers a breadth of topics, ranging from runway trends to street style and occasionally, press presentation and fashion events.

3. With more than one blogger, how do you guys divide up the workload?

We knew our respective strengths and weaknesses from the beginning, so we just had to segregate the tasks accordingly — or the very least, try to compromise if one of us is occupied at the moment. Communication is always key.

4. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

D: I like to keep it simple, comfort comes first– I’m beyond the phase of ‘dressing up’ to impress while in college previously and for me, it’s substance over style, not the other way round.

R: We always opt for the sartorial and classic tailoring rather than street wear, just that my closet have a lot more hues as compared to Dinie’s! I love bow ties, flower pins and pocket squares.

5. Who are some bloggers you guys look up to?

Definitely the pioneers of fashion blogging: Bryanboy, Susie Bubble, Tommy Ton and The Sartorialist, to name a few.

6. Who are your favorite designers?

D: Consuelo Castiglioni of Marni, Raf Simons and Lucas Ossendrijver of Lanvin.

R: I love Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. Season after season, still a favourite.

7. Since the start of your blog, what are your most memorable experiences?

We would both agree on winning the ‘Best Fashion Blog’ award being our most pinnacle point, attending Milan Fashion Week was a dream! But honestly, each and every experiences no matter how big or small, contributed one way or another to this amazing journey we had thus far.

8. What do you think about the fashion blogging scene, locally and internationally?

Locally, we feel that we need to rid the competitive mentality. Think passion before competition. When we first started out, fashion blogging was about passion and having a unique voice. Now, it’s progressively evolving into a moneymaking tool as oppose to a platform to be heard. The international blogging scene are, however, more respectable as most bloggers earn their rights through their work and art. Even with the new generation of bloggers overseas, they wouldn’t compromise voice for money. We’re not saying that the local fashion blogging scene here lacks passion, but the scene here is constantly involving in unhealthy competition and that should change, else, we’re only hurting this tiny industry.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

Never compromise passion for money and never compromise on quality. Do it well or don’t do it at all.

Designing both womenswear and menswear, Qiuwen’s versatility lies in her understanding of how a little androgyny can go a long way.

MARILYN TAN JEWELLERY

After 18 years spent designing and creating unique contemporary pieces by hand, Marilyn Tan is easily one of Singapore’s most notable jewellery designer. Drawing inspiration from her travels and architecture, her work are reflections of places as faraway as the Antarctic. Other than using precious stones, silver, white and yellow gold, Marilyn also employs other materials, including leather, acrylic and silk. This unconventional pairing of materials lends her pieces a distinctive uniqueness that is both exquisite and edgy.

This week’s interview is nothing about fashion. Inspired by the recent sporty chic trend and with the Olympics 2012 on the horizon, we decided to speak to a local athlete.

Jack of all trades, Laurence Wong is the Managing Director of Avivar Audience Communications Pte Ltd and Avivar Integrated Solutions Ptd Ltd. When he is not organizing high profile events like Youth Olympics 2010, Laurence represents Singapore for F1 Powerboat Racing. Also the choreographer and advisor for our past National Day Parades, Laurence Wong keeps himself very busy while adding more projects in his impressive portfolio. We had a short chat with him where he dished out advice for aspiring F1 Powerboat Racers.

1. Can you tell us more about your background? How did you get into F1 Powerboat Racing?

I choreographed the National Day Parade SEA Display in 2008 and I got to know our Malaysian counterparts in powerboat racing. I have extensive experience in driving boats because I was in the Singapore Navy. I am also a wakeboarding enthusiast. Our Malaysian counterparts invited me to join them at Malaysia for powerboat racing as they think I have a lot of potential in this sport. We are called the Singapore F1 Powerboat Team and we are coached by our competitor in Malaysia. I raced against my coach in the most recent F1 race.

2. What other projects are you working on?

I am the Managing Director of Avivar Communications Ptd Ltd. We organized Singapore 2010 Youth Olympics Games and various sports presentations. We also organize events for Nickelodeon in Singapore, as well as various events for the Singapore Sports Council, just to name a few.

3. What are some things you do before a race?

I never start a race without talking to my wife. I make it a point to communicate with her before a race as accidents do happen and I do not know what will happen once I am racing. I also make sure I have my safety gear on. Safety is more important that the race.

4. What are the most memorable experiences since you started powerboat racing?

The first time I raced in Singapore and my fellow countrymen cheered for our team. Many people came for our race and it felt great when they waved the Singapore flag. I also met up with countless strangers and they commented that we made Singapore proud.

5. Do you have any advice for aspiring powerboat racers?

You have to learn to drive safe before you can learn to race. If you do not know how to drive safe, you are not qualified to race. Also, if you are racing for personal pride, do not race. Racing is a team sport and you are racing for your country. Mindset is very important when it comes to powerboat racing and it is a team effort. It is also crucial to stay extremely fit, powerboat racing is about endurance and you are what you eat. Powerboat racers will have to race regularly.

Sandy Cheng is a Taiwanese American blogger who started Sandy a la Mode 2 years ago. One of the highlights of her blog was how she created outfits to fit her growing belly when she was pregnant. We had a short chat with her on how she juggles time between blogging and working and what are some tips to become a chic mummy blogger like her!

1. What inspired you to start blogging? Can you tell us more about your background?

My name is Sandy, I’m Taiwanese American, and I was born, raised, and currently live in the Midwest. I got engaged in November 2008, planned a wedding in 6 months and got married in May 2009, and then I totally realized that I missed all of the planning and creativity that went into wedding planning and thus my blog, Sandy a la Mode, was born in January 2010.

2. What do you think of the Fashion Blogging scene now?

It’s great that there are so many fashion blogs out there. It’s fun to look around at other people’s fashion to get inspiration. Not to say that one should copy others but sometimes it helps in expanding ones own fashion sense.

3. What do you usually blog about?

My blog started off to be a place for me to document my adventures in photography, cooking, and sewing… but has since evolved to be more about fashion, inspirations and being a new mama to an adorable baby boy!

4. Do you work? If you do, how do you juggle the time between your blog and your work?

I work as a Healthcare IT Consultant for my full-time job. This job has me traveling the world and visiting a lot of different places. It’s a great opportunity for me to practice my photography and learn about fashion in different areas! Blogging is my second job, but it’s hardly a job since I enjoy it so much. It does however, take up a lot of my lunch breaks and evenings.

5. Who are some of the bloggers you look up to?

I look up to Kendi Everyday for her ability to buy affordable pieces and remix her closet so well. Her looks are definitely inspiring and achievable! I also love The Daybook because her looks are bold and she does a lot of pattern mixing which is something that I’m starting to dabble with more!

6. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I consider my personal style as colorful, classic, and trendy. I don’t like to overdo it with too many patterns or textures, but like to keep it more simple. Most my clothes are bought from Forever 21, H&M, Target, ModCloth, ShopRuche, YesStyle and just more affordable shops!

6. Who are some of your style icons?

I love Lauren Conrad and her clothing line at Kohl’s. Her style is very cute and trendy.

7. What are the upcoming plans for your blog?

I don’t have any big upcoming plans but to keep blogging like I currently am

8. What are the most memorable experiences ever since the start of your blog?

One of the favorite things I did on my blog was weekly fashion posts with my growing pregnant belly. It was definitely a challenge trying to find cute outfits to fit around my belly, but I had a lot of fun with it! You can see the recap here.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers out there?

If you are thinking about starting a blog, just do it! Just make sure that you will have some time to devote to it because it can be very time consuming. One other thing to keep in mind is that you should blog for yourself and not others, you’ll be much happier that way!

Every year, hundreds of fashion weeks take place all over the globe and some of the designers who show at these ‘lesser’ events are well-worth your interest. Here are three alternative, up-and-coming fashion weeks that you should be paying attention to, if you are not already doing so. [To play fair and for diversity, I have shortlisted one fashion week from Australia, Europe and Asia respectively.]

AUSTRALIA FASHION WEEK

Technically speaking, Australia Fashion Week is not an ‘up-and-coming’ event. After all, it has been showing for about 15 years now. Yet, the quality of its participating designers have steadily improved over the years, with the clothes becoming more sophisticated without losing that endearing Down Under vibe. Hosted in Sydney and with just about 35 designers showing each year, it does seem modest when compared with the immensely more hectic schedule in the Big Four. However, if you believe in quality over quantity, this is a must-watch. As Australian fashion rapidly came of age in the last decade, you will spot many internationally acclaimed names in the line-up, including Alice McCall, Dion Lee, Lover and Stolen Girlfriends Club, just to name a few. From the colourful elegance of Alex Perry to the pretty femininity at Lisa Ho, you will soon find that you cannot get enough of this once-a-year affair.

COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK

Northern Europe’s largest fashion event, Copenhagen Fashion Week happens every February and August to showcase “a growing number of new and known Danish talents with a preview of their upcoming collections”. As with many of its Nordic neighbours, Danish style pays almost as much attention to function as to form. This results in an uniquely modern, feminine aesthetic that focuses on high quality, beautiful silhouettes and interesting details. While Henrik Vibskov may be the most famous alumni of Copenhagen Fashion Week, other labels, such as by Marlene Birger, Rützou and Stine Goya, have been making waves in the region and the world for years. Although most of the designers at CFW creates womenswear, the men need not feel left out because there is a handful of very good menswear brands in the mix. Jean//Philip offers cool clothes with a dark edge while street-inspired Soulland produces tasteful, well-made casual wear.

SEOUL FASHION WEEK

Move over Tokyo; Seoul Fashion Week is having its time in the sunlight. Having lived in the shadows of its fashion power house neighbour for far too long, Seoul’s fashion is going from strength to strength as its designers mature and start putting out clothes that are not just pretty but thought-provoking as well. In general, the Koreans are big on vivid colours, bold graphics and visually-arresting prints. While some designers design for the ladies who lunch (e.g. An Yoon Jung), the runway was dominated in Spring/Summer 2012 by youthful, fun and often experimental looks that are not only modern, but hints at a brighter future for the country’s fashion industry. Of all, I found Kiok‘s collection, with its incredibly large range (from distressed skinny jeans to sculptural evening gowns), to be the most captivating .

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, or the CFDA will be throwing their annual award hoopla this June. Of course, to create fanfare for the coming event, they announced the nominees for the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards, which will take place on Monday, June 4th at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.

Making headlines is Johnny Depp, who is set to be honoured as a Fashion Icon. The actor will become the first male to pick up the accolade when he is hailed for his “personal and eclectic sense of style”. Lady Gaga was presented with the title last year.

Of course, designers are celebrated at this industry shindig.

The nominees for the Swarovski Award for Menswear are Antonio Azzuolo, Phillip Lim, and Todd Snyder. For the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design, the nominees are Irene Neuwirth, Pamela Love, and Tabitha Simmons.

The honorary awards go to a diverse group of people. The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the fiercely independent, four-time CFDA Fashion Award winner, will be presented to Tommy Hilfiger.

The Media Award, given in honor of Eugenia Sheppard, the influential journalist who revolutionized fashion reporting with her reports in the New York City Herald Tribune, will be given to Scott Schuman & Garance Doré.

The Founders Award, given in honor of CFDA founder Eleanor Lambert who is widely credited with putting American fashion on the map, will go to Andrew Rosen.

The International Award will go to Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons for making an outstanding creative contribution to the world of fashion.

1. Can you tell us more about your label and your background?

The word Episene originates from the word epicene which means “belonging to or partaking of the characteristics of both genders. “ Our main inspiration behind the designs stems from drawing elements from both genders and blending them together, coming up with a design that’s uniquely Episene. We strongly believe in individualism and the freedom to express oneself while not forgetting one’s roots. Therefore, besides being slightly androgynous, the designs are heavily influenced by art, history and philosophy. They have an edgy and unique twist that allows the wearer to express their own personality.

Ever since I was young, the outfits worn by models at fashion shows have always fascinated me. After watching them on the runway, I would always go home and try to replicate some of the creations by adapting what I had in my wardrobe. After my O levels, I decided to take this interest further and enrolled in LASALLE, College of The Arts to study fashion design. I have a diploma in fashion design from LASALLE and a degree in fashion design from Raffles Design Institute.

2. What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

For my Spring/Summer 2012 collection, I drew inspiration from Marcel Proust whose novel centered on involuntary memories. In the novel, past and present merge, reality appears in half forgotten experiences and parts of the past are felt differently at different times. I try to portray this I my designs, through the contrast of garment tailoring and draping. At the end of the novel, the narrator realizes that his vocation is to capture the past still alive within us. That is the whole concept behind this collection, capturing past through present.

3. How does your design process work?

I draw inspiration from things that inspire me, which are usually from books I’ve read or movies that I’ve watched. After which, I’ll do more through research on the theme that I’ve chosen and work on the details, look and feel of the collection.

4.What ar the struggles you have faced since the start of your label?

Both my diploma and degree courses focused mainly on fashion design, so my knowledge about the business aspects such as marketing and accounting is minimal. Since I am the only one running the business, I have to learn all these skills from scratch. Still, I find that my passion for fashion motivates me even more to understand all these inner workings of how to run a successful fashion label.

5. Who are some of the designers you look up to?

Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo and Martin Margiela are the designers I really admire because they have completely refined the notion of fashion with thought-provoking and emotion stirring garments. I admire their ability to be trendsetters and hope to do so too in the future.

6. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

My style is edgy but laid-back. I like statement pieces that are comfy. The one thing you will always find in my wardrobe is an oversized top.

7. What do you think is a must-have in everyone’s wardrobe?

An Episene over-sized shirt, which is comfy, versatile and stylish at the same time!

8. Are we allowed a sneak preview of your next collection?

No peeking yet but I will definitely let you in when I have more ready.

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?

Never give up on your dreams and you will eventually be successful one day.

1. What inspired you to start blogging?

I started blogging as I feel that my passion in photography and vintage fashion is getting more serious and I needed a place to share my ideas and thoughts with wider audience other than my friends. Blogging is a perfect way to articulate what I have in my mind without being awkward with getting in touch with strangers.

2. What do you think about the blogging scene in Indonesia?

Blogging, before, wasn’t as popular as it is now. It used to be more personal but now it seems more public. More people are starting to have blogs for many different reasons. Besides being competitive, blogging is also a serious profession where one could make a living and build a career from there.

3. Who are some of your favorite bloggers?

My all-time favorite blogger is Rhiannon Leifheit of Liebemarlene. She’s the one who made me start my blog, and also the one who I never missed reading each time new post is released! I can’t really say why she’s a favorite – she’s classic, unique, quirky, and flawless.

4. What do you do when you are stumped for ideas to blog?

I will talk to my friends to make fun projects together (to be brought into the blog) and do blogwalking. I also love, especially, visiting blogs with different “genre” from mine, because they mostly have totally distinct and fresh content that magically can inspire me to start writing a new post for my own.

5. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

My personal style is basically vintage-inspired. I started to dress like a feminine schoolgirl before, with lots of collars and polkadot patterns, but now I’m also into the 60′s Mod style and even something “darker” like 80s grunge with leathers and torn stockings. My signature style can be basically girly and sweet, but I do love changing my daily style with those different influences.

6. Who are some of your favorite designers?

Salvatore Ferragamo, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, Valentino and recently Marlene Birger.

7. What are your most memorable experiences since the start of your blog?

Well, I flew from my town to another town and to another country during 2011 for free because of my sponsors and events where I was invited, so the fact that the blog has turned into something I could make a living from is definitely one of the most significant experience for me!

8. You also have an online shop, how do you juggle the time between the blog and the shop?

I got helped by the staff and also my bestfriend, who play a role as my partner and the one who control the production management (I’m usually more into the designing and creative-related task), so for now I can pretty much make a good balance between those two… I also make new blog contents that can save me more time, like taking my daily pictures everyday at my bedroom or doing collaboration with other bloggers/my bestfriends.

9. If you can escape to a city for 24 hours, which city will it be and what will you be doing there?

Definitely NEW YORK! I used to be into Paris, but lately I really adore the sense of freedom that New York has, the way New Yorkers live their life and the certain creative ambience around the city. I hope to drop by many places as possible – take an obligatory picnic-scene pictures at Central Park, shop by the whole fancy store at Fifth Avenue,  wandering around SoHo, chill out in the bar, eating bagels and pizza, or maybe get lost somewhere until I have another reason to extend my 24 hours time-limit!

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?

Be honest about who you are and what you like -  basically write about anything we really into, instead of doing what others might think cool. Never blog something you won’t even read yourself, and enjoy the whole supporting habit (receiving and giving comments, getting to know new friends, etc). Things will be easier if you could really make your blog as your bestfriend!

Having gone from strength to strength in her two short year in the business, one of the highlight of Inez’s career includes a special capsule collection with local fashion label hansel last year. The navy sports jacket is a versatile piece in any man’s wardrobe and de riguer in a light weight cotton or linen fabrication – especially in this tropical clime. A pale pink shirt sets off the blue better than a white, and is kinder where white might drown out the complexion of the face.

1. What inspired you to take up fashion photography?

I always found the human form fascinating and loved the idea of having total control over creating a character/ story through photographing them in various clothes and styling in different environments.

2. Can you tell us a little background about yourself?

I graduated from JC 2 years ago, I guess my art knowledge and background from high school could be the building blocks of my career now. I was fine art trained in that aspect really helped when it comes to imagining a concept and defining a personal taste.

3. Do you think awards are neccessary for a photographer and whether it is important to go to a school to learn photography?

I personally have never been formally trained in a photography school. For some people, college is an integral part of their growing process and really want to be part of that the process, there are others who feel they learn better on their own. Ultimately I feel that it really boils down to how strong your passion is and how committed you are at honing your craft because these are skills which can also be learnt out of the academic boundary. Same goes for awards, they are definitely a good form of recognition for a photographer’s career, again I would never assume I know if that’s the important for anybody else.

5. What are your most memorable experiences?

Getting to travel abroad for work is always going to be a memorable & rewarding experience for any photographer.

6. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

I would describe my photography aesthetic to be a contemporary and modern narrative. I’m constantly trying to sell & project my ideal of perfection and beauty in the human form. The women I represented are beautiful people who do not try too hard, they’re not afraid to have abit of fun at times and are always in total control, they know what they want.

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion photographers?

Develop a real passion for what you do and make the best out of whatever you have.

1. What inspired you to start a fashion blog?

I was always passionate about fashion, more specifically magazines and what better way to indulge that interest than to start a blog?

It felt like the right thing to do especially a few years ago when the scene was still quite young and new. And of course as time went by, I honed and reshaped the direction of my blog ending up with DO/DIY, sensing that there was a lack of a proper DIY blog here in Singapore.

2. Can you tell us a little background about yourself?

Well, I’m 18 this year and I go to LASALLE College of the arts where I study Fashion Communication. I’ve been blogging, on and off for about 2 years now and I must say it’s been a wonderful experience.

3. You have interned with Catalog Magazine, what is the biggest difference between working for a print magazine and a blog?

For me the main difference was that under CATALOG, there are more restrictions as to what we can or cannot do as the magazine needs to present a cohesive message as opposed to just individual ideas. But while there were more limitations when it came to the type of content, I found that there were more resources at my disposal to bring a story to life, as opposed to a blog where we don’t usually get that luxury.

4. How do you get inspirations for your DIYs?

For me I really love the work that Elie Top, Lanvin’s brilliant jewelry designer does for the brand and I’ve been inspired by this combination of very industrial elements with very angular lines and I always try to incorporate those elements in my DIYs. That’s probably the reason why I’m so drawn to mixing hardware store finds with more polished elements like a silk ribbon or a leather rope.

5. Who are some of your favorite designers?

I have quite a few, but right now and I think the work Humberto Leon and Carol Lim are doing at both Opening Ceremony and Kenzo feels very cool and I love that vibe! Also people like Jonny Johansson at ACNE, Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver at Lanvin, Rick Owens, The Proenza Schouler boys… Generally people with that sort of downtown cool vibe, I’m automatically drawn to.

6. What do you think is a must have item in anyone’s wardrobe?

A great piece of lightweight outerwear with a bit of structure is so important! It could be an unlined linen blazer for example. It really elevates even the simplest of looks and it actually makes sense in our unforgiving weather.

7. What do you think about the fashion blogging scene, locally and internationally?

I do love the fact that there are so many bloggers right now, I think it’s great exposure for the industry both locally and internationally. And I think the next step would be to concentrate on refining these blogs, mine included, so that we can begin produce high quality content which can help to really elevate the local fashion scene.

8. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?

It’s all about having a strong point of view, focussing it and knowing how to express it in a way that is actually worth reading. No one wants to read a robotic blog, devoid of personality with nothing but copy-pasted press releases. Now that’s just sad.

1. Power Yoga
It’s invigorating and really works every muscle in my body. An hour of Power Yoga burns 400+ calories, keeps the heart pumping real fast and makes me sweat buckets. Call me a masochist, I love the achy feeling after every workout! I would recommend this Power Yoga DVD by Rodney Yee. I love wearing my comfy but stylish Yoga outfits, even when I am not doing Yoga.

2. Wolfie & Sparky
I love bringing my adopted Siberian Husky, Wolfie and my little Weiner dog, Sparky, for walks at the beach. I adore them to bits! Thinking of getting these cute dog collars for the pups.

3. Friday Date Night with the Hubby
The hubby has booked a dinner at Sofra, my favourite Turkish restaurant. Can’t wait to sink my teeth into the scrumptious kebabs. The sesame bread is a must try!

Hmmm what should I wear? I think I shall wear this dress that I just bought online.

While male fashion bloggers are not exactly a brand new phenomenon, they were previously concentrated in the “Street Style” category (think: The Sartorialist and The Facehunter); technically speaking, they were more like photographers with blogs than bloggers per se. Kate Loves Me is a fashion-drenched reminder of what it is like to be young, wild, free and of course, beautiful. Pelayo Diaz is a Central Saint Martins student, a darling of the London party scene, sometimes DJ and bold fashion chameleon all rolled into one pretty package. His greatest contribution to fashion may be his devil-may-care attitude to the conventional boundaries between menswear and womenswear – from toting Chanel handbags to donning highly metrosexual outfits, he’s been there, done that. With party snapshots and runway pictures galore, this site is sweet candy for the eyes.

WE COULD GROW UP TOGETHER

Fashion photographer Kwannam Chu of We Could Grow Up Together has the dream job – trotting the globe and taking pictures of beautiful boys. Allowing us a glimpse into the exciting world of men’s fashion editorials. The subject matter itself may be quite enough to lure the fashion lover to this blog, but it is Chu’s endearingly personal take on it that keeps them coming back. This Video shows you 2 methods of contouring that you can easily learn, so as to achieve a slimmer frame! The products she use may not be available at wherever you may be, so using the concealers which you feel suits you best will do the trick too. Just a couple of reminders below…

Tips from Marlena:
1. Not everyone needs to contour- if you feel that your cheekbones are prominent or that your face is thin, it is best not to contour as you may appear too “chiseled”
2. ALWAYS choose a cream or powder that is just 2 shades darker than your skin- any darker, and it looks unnatural
3. If you use cream to contour, make sure to apply after your foundation and before your setting powder
4. It takes practice getting the contour technique down as each face is different, so don’t give up!

1. Can you tell us more about your label and background about the both of you?

G: Jamie and I are cousins and we have always approached fashion with a different eye. Neither of us had any formal fashion training so the designs in our 20:TWOTHREE label are born outside the realm of taught rules. Our creations start from the basics and we dress them up by playing around with geometry and draping.

J: We like to think that our pieces are timeless and transcend gender and body proportion. It is in this way that we try to show that one’s fashion style need not conform to the expections of society or what current trends might be. Genevieve graduated with a degree in Mass Communications from SIM-RMIT, while I graduated with a degree in Commerce from the University of Melbourne.

2. What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

G: Our collection, Clarity in Blindness was inspired by the visually impaired and a pair of vintage octagon-shaped glasses that I chanced upon. The repeated layering and soft draping of the pieces in this collection represent visual obstruction and obscurity while breaking traditional shapes and forms.

J: The octagon is a fairl atypical structure with eight sides and its shape is incorporated throughout our collectipon. Through the layering, we want to show that even in darkness, light exists and there can be clarity when viewed from different angles and/or lenses.

3. With more than one designer, how does your design process work?

J: The initial design process begins with us throwing in random ideas in a brainstorming process and deciding the general direction of the collection. Genevieve who heads the dreative process, then usually goes on to polish and complete the rest of the collection. I manage the business aspect of the label, which includes things like deciding on 20:TWOTHREE’s branding and marketing visuals. However, our responsibilities overlap at times and we always consult each other before any major decisions are made. We arrange regular meetings to keep each other updated on the different aspects of the label as a whole.

4. What are the struggles you girls faced since the start of your collection?

J: I think our struggle is a common one amongst Singaporean designers – that is striking a careful balance between aesthetics, cost and quality. A common example of this is when a particular fabric does not go well with the cut of the apparel.

5. Who are some of the designers you girls look up to?

G: Instead of saying, “ admire “, I respect Rick Owens and Kunihiko Morinaga ( Anrealage ). They are vastly different designers in terms of aesthetic but their passion for creating fashion is similar and very tangible. They are two of the few designers who have touched my heart.

6. Can oyu tell us more about your personal style?

G: I think “ bipolar” is a good word to describe me. Black is a consistent color throughtout my wardrobe but I like to throw in vintage prints when I am in the mood.

J: I’d say Genevieve and I are pretty much the same. Lots of black, vintage prints and pre-loved clothing, but I accessorise a lot less.

7. What do you think is a must-have in everyone’s wardrobe?

G: An over-sized white or black tee is my pick for a wardrobe staple and if I may add, tons of chunky jewelry.

J: Maybe it is not a must-have, but I do have a little black dress I always rely on, whether to wear on its own or with prints.

8. Are we allowed to know about your next collection?

G: We plan to sneak little hints of our next collection into our current one, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

9. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?

G: Stay humble and true to yourself, never stop learning.

J: Always try something new. Visit a new place, walk a different route. It helps keep you alive and inspired.

I actually started blogging because I needed a place to store my inspirations then I found local bloggers who actually post their outfits and that’s how I got into personal style blogging.

2. What do you think about the blogging scene in Indonesia?

It’s a booming scene. There are lots of new (and great!) bloggers and there are lots of companies approaching us for collaborations. I’m not complaining on anything

3. What do you usually blog about?

I usually blog on my daily outfits and other issues that I would like to share with my readers. I also often do a post on my photography works.

4. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

My personal style is mood based but on a general line it’s sophisticated. I dress to however I’m feeling in the morning and that could range from being a head to toe color blocker to an all-black scandinavian look.

5. Who are the bloggers whom you look up to?

I look up to Elin Kling from Style by Kling. She wears simple pieces yet she makes the most out of them. On top of that, what I adore most from her is how she turns her blogging career into business such as running a magazine (STYLEBY), an H&M collaboration, and many more. I also adore Garance Dore for her ability to capture brilliant images and putting that talent into a photography business.

6. What are the most memorable experiences since the start of your blog?

Winning the ELLE Style Awards last year, hosting the Hérmes Paris Mon Ami event, and starting out as a freelance stylist and photographer for different brands. Being a stylist and a photographer is like a dream job for me.

7. Who are your favorite designers?

This list changes from collection to collections. I don’t have a favorite designer in particular but Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Philip Lim, Dries Van Noten, Valentino, and Prada are shows that I always look forward to every season. Right now, I am also loving Prabal Gurung, Mary Katrantzou, and the Olsens’ The Row collection.

8. What do you do when you are stumped for ideas to blog about?

I rarely get stumped for ideas even though that might sound unrealistic to you. The thing is that fashion is a lifestyle and with a lifestyle, you’re always connected to the topic. Whether it’s discovering new designers, photographers, blogs or even just today’s outfit, there’s always something that I can share to my readers. The only thing that keeps me from writing/posting is time.

9. What are your upcoming plans for your blog?

I do hope that I can attend fashion weeks in other countries in the future. I also hope that I can influence more and more readers not just in Indonesia but all over the world!

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?

Blog because you’re passionate about a subject. Blogging for fame and money is doomed to fail.

Time to reflect on some of my gorgeous travel loot!

Some of my best steals from a month on the go.

1. Il Bisonte Leather Shopping Tote

Backpacks may be more sensible on the shoulders, but they crumple a well-pressed shirt. I prefer a nice, capacious shopping tote with a handle large enough to accommodate my elbow nook. The colours are also bright enough for the impending Summer – and all the better to warn drivers when I go out at night.

2. Balmain Double Belted Leather Boots

When traversing varied terrains, where buttery leather loafers crumble in snow and countryside, a well-chosen boot fairs surprisingly well. Pick one with a good arch, that’s comfortable to walk in for hours. A classic shape with few bells and whistles will also transition better between day and night, town and country, and from look to look. And when in doubt, dress up – if I had to pick one, I’d go with black, which does well in a pinch for daywear, but brown always looks declasse at night.

3. Balmain Cotton Canvas Double Breasted Jacket

A sharp, well cut navy jacket in a sensible material – any cotton variation, but never synthetic – dresses up any tired old outfit. Put this over a T-shirt and a pair of slacks and you’ll be the most stylish person at the supermarket. Swap out the buttons for an elegant dinner look.

Help to put Singapore on the fashion map by giving these new kids on the block some love! It was a tough call, but here are our top three picks: MASH-UP, Mils and QUAINTHOOD.

MASH-UP

If you see fashion as a game of instant gratification and the eternal pursuit of the new, then MASH-UP will give you a refreshingly different perspective. Dedicated to bringing new meanings to old things (both physically and metaphorically), this fun-loving local label respects the heritage of old garments and uses DIY techniques to bring them back to their former glory. Using city-friendly materials like denim and jersey, the three founders’ (Shaf, Daniela and Nat) designs are mostly colourful, often tongue-on-cheek and definitely unconventional. These are clothes for those of us who do not take ourselves, or fashion, too seriously. Girls (and boys) just wanna have fun, right?

MILS

One of the great things about Parco next NEXT is how there are always a few talented menswear designers in the mix; after all, men are often as fashion-conscious as women in these progressive days. This time around, there is Sunny Lim, the designer behind Mils, a luxury menswear label targeted at creative and free-spirited men. Each piece, even the T-shirts, appears well thought out and constructed. Although Lim focuses on the staples in a man’s wardrobe, he has updated them with bold details like pleating, draping and embellishments that are not common in menswear. His clothes proves that fashion does not mean sacrificing masculinity for style.

QUAINTHOOD

The classic white shirt is a key inspiration for Joy Ng’s first collection for QUAINTHOOD. A contemporary womenswear label that threads the line between cool edginess and chic sensibilities, it stands out from the competition with its sharp tailoring and flattering cuts. Although the designs are certainly pretty enough, there is a subtle but interesting dark undertone to these clothes. Aiming to express not only fashion, but a lifestyle and an attitude, these pieces are made for the cool city girl who expresses herself through the clothes she choose to wear.

So what do you do when…
1. you want to use a few colors at the same time?
2. you have no space to store all that lipstick tubes into your make-up drawer?
3. you want to own a compact lip palette with all your favorite colours?
and… well… the list can go on and on…

Here’s a video we found that teaches you ‘How To’ melt and pod your lipstick to basically any compact container or palette you want. *Remember to dig out all the product from the tube of lipstick, there’s actually alot left…

Tools you’ll need:
- Lots of lipstick
- A big stainless steel spoon
- A Candle (of any size)
- A Lighter/Match sticks
- A Spatula (or u can grab those disposable stirrers from MacDonalds or Starbucks)
- Plenty of Tissue Paper/Paper Towels
- Chosen Container for your New Lipstick Palette
- Alcohol Spray (for cleaning make-up brushes)

It may seem like there’s a number of things you’ll need to prepare, but hey! Do the maths as you’ll be saving some bucks for a little learning journey! It’s pretty fun & I’m gonna be so busy this weekend making my own.

**Tips:
- Remember to sterilise your lipstick before you start, you can spray some alcohol and wipe it down with tissue
- Do not touch the lipstick with your fingers after you’ve sterilized it
- Be careful not to touch the heated spoon & careful to not burn yourself!
- Muji carries plenty of pretty make-up containers, reasonable price too!

1. Can you tell us more about your background and what inspired you to start a streetstyle blog?

It was totally unintended – I used photographs from a book of people (which turned out to be The Sartorialist book) to base characters on for short stories, then one day my partner said “why don’t you take your own photos”. So I did, but it started out really as blog to show the photos of people I took from which I based stories on that I used to post as well. Then it just became very apparent that street style photography was very popular, so I dropped off the writing and I’ve gone from there with the photography.

2. Have you always loved photography?

It’s funny as I always thought how much I’d love to be a photographer, but it’s one of those things that you think “oh, I can’t or it can never be me”. But I think I’ve always had an appreciation for good photographs since my father and Grandfather on my mother’s side were both really into photography as part of their daily lives, so the influence or understanding has been there. And I’ve come to love how anyone can take photographs, and if you start to learn about the camera, composition, the subjects; if you stick at it and try and craft it, then you’ll be a photographer. Plus it’s so instant! It’s like you find your subject, background, light and composition, wait for the exact right moment when all things are balanced, press the shutter and it’s done, end of story. It’s great.

3. What do you think about Singapore being one of the most fashionable cities, in your opinion, are we there yet?

I’m certainly not an authority on designating fashion cities, and while I’m increasingly becoming attracted to fashion from a technical perspective (cut, colour, line, shape, form etc), I don’t really know enough to give a first hand answer. But if you look at the cities right now that are at the forefront and in the press – it’s still obviously London, New York, Paris and Milan with not many other places even close.

With Singapore, two big things that I do consider: first of course the weather and that it’s just incredibly difficult to adopt fashion in it’s entirety in that environment, but secondly even though Singapore is doing a great job of building up fashion weeks, they seem to be more public shows of foreign labels, rather than driving press and buyers to focus on fashion from that part of the world. Having said that, I think the Blueprint event is good on paper, but still, until you start seeing Singapore regularly – almost daily – on and in international press being labelled “a fashion capital/leader” then it’s really hard to say its one of the “the most fashionable cities”.

4. How do you go about approaching people to take the photos?

It’s simple – go up and ask! I mean there’s the bit before where I’ve waited and then I see someone, then I’ve got to figure out a spot, but otherwise really it’s just go up and ask. And it’s not like a clipboard, official type thing like “excuse me but I am photographing for this site and today I am focusing on coats and you have a nice coat so do you have 5 minutes for me to take a photograph of you in your coat and then to fill out a questionnaire”… it’s just a casual “Excuse me, I like your style, I keep a street style site, can I take your photo, it’ll only take 20 seconds, cool?” I think I come across as quite fluid and driving the moment as one continuous thing.

5. You have been to many cities to take streetstyle photos, which is your favorite and why?

I love different cities for different reasons. But Tokyo for sure, because it’s so well developed, so mature, so cutting edge. I think Seoul and maybe Shanghai can become strong contenders for the next Asian fashion capitals – if you look at how many people are interested and involved and playing around with style & fashion. But from a “go there and see it” perspective, Tokyo is just head and shoulders about the rest. It’s great too as that whole clichéd “wacky” Tokyo style represents about 1% of what’s really there, and I almost love that not many other people (photographers) are interested in the more fashionable and real style looks because for some reason people just think of the cliché. So it’s like it’s mine to play around with for a bit and I can’t wait to get back there.

6. What is the best thing about being a streetstyle photographer?

Lots of things! Its fun, I get to travel, I get to meet lots of people, in a lot of cities people love it and take it as a compliment, and it’s a really fast turnover of good things. It suits me very well.

7. Can you tell us more about your personal style?

It’s relatively straightforward – I have a simple travelling wardrobe of a few pairs of shoes, a few pairs of pants, a few good shirts, a few good sweaters and a few good coats. I tend to cycle through my wardrobe, like I keep an item for a while, get bored of it and replace it.

8. Which streetstyle bloggers do you look up to?

I wouldn’t say “look up to”, but more which do I learn from and which do I enjoy. And still I think The Sartorialist has done a great job of remaining very cutting edge and taking photographs that are just unlike anyone else’s to some extent, but then otherwise I like Soren Jepsen’s The Locals and I do flick to Stylites in Beijing, just because I’m trying to figure out how it’s possible to do China. And otherwise I look back to the older fashion photographers who have some work set on the street, like Albert Watson and Helmut Newton –  I think it’s great to learn from fashion photographers and try and push this is all further away from “Street snaps”. I have to say that I hate that term.

9. Where are you currently shooting your streetstyle photos and where will you be heading to next?

I’m in Taipei, then off to Seoul in Korea, then Tokyo, then I hope to be able to visit Seoul Fashion Week toward the end of the year, go to Shanghai, Hong Kong and who knows where else – there are lots of places in Asia of course! It’s potentially the start of a long trip and hopefully many, many photographs.

10. Do you have any advice to aspiring streetstyle bloggers?

I think don’t be afraid to take a bad photo, the wrong photo, the wrong style etc.. because you learn from everything. Every photograph is a chance to learn. Just like style and fashion – it’s almost like you learn by making mistakes, by refining, by tuning and turning it out again to make it very sharp. And otherwise, I think you have to be very confident, sincere and I think it’s best to focus on what you want, rather than trying to take photographs that you think people want. I think that’s what fashion magazines try and do with street style – dictate it depending on what they think the audience wants, which is why nobody really looks at fashion magazine streetstyle at the same way they look at the independent photographers and bloggers.

Again, without being an absolute authority, it feels like fashion magazines are in a corner because they seem dictated by very powerful advertisers who they’re scared to lose, as well as established reader bases that expect them to be one thing and nothing else. So, as a blogger, don’t get tied down too early – like advertisers or commercial jobs – enjoy the freedom of being able to do whatever you want. I have zero intention of doing anything else, which is why on a commercial basis I am a total failure!! But then, I’m not in it for the money, it’s for the kicks!

Known for her fashion forward outfits, Silvia Siantar of Poisepolish.com started blogging out of her love for fashion. When she is not reviewing runway shows and editorials, Silvia is a full time student at Curtin University. We caught up with her on her thoughts on the fashion blogging scene and whether she thinks blogs will overtake magazines.

1. What inspired you to start blogging?
I started blogging because I wanted to major in fashion in University, but my parents didn’t like the idea. Thus, I thought fashion blogging is the least that I can do related to my hobby and passion. Starting a blog is relatively cheap and not so fussy. I think there is no other medium for me to write as practical as this. I was lucky that it opens the doors to me to finally meet interesting people in the fashion industry.

2. What do you usually feature in your blog?
I do outfit posts (personal style), runway reviews, shopping guide, gift ideas (for special occasions), editorials review, product review and events, as well as other random things that are inspirational.

3. As you are currently a student in Curtin University, how do you juggle your time between blogging and studies?
It’s necessary for me to take photos of my outfit for my outfit posts, but I usually do that on my off days. For other kinds of entry, I can do them at night. I usually plan ahead what I want to write during my spare time, sometimes before I go to bed (I’ll write the next day), even when showering! I tend to write only for about 30-45 mins per post, sometimes less, so it’s pretty manageable.

4. What are your thoughts on the current blogging scene, in Singapore and internationally, do you think blogs will overtake magazines?
In Singapore and internationally, there are surely emerging bloggers on the rise, issues are that some might be copycats, but some are pretty good. I think bloggers have very diverse style of writing and posting ideas. I don’t have the right to say who is more relevant, more insightful, because people (their fans) can deliberately choose what they think fits their needs. On blogs and traditional media (magazines), I don’t think they should compete with each other. Up until now, I know a lot of people that treat them as very different entities, I do too, personally. On one hand, magazines are way more tangible, you can feel the paper, look at photos in print, smell the paper and glue or whatever. Those are very physical elements that people cannot find in blogs. But magazines themselves have to continuously differentiate themselves from other magazines, due to more intense competition. Blogs play a huge role in that, in which they are free and they can be accessed on phones or tablet (very practical). As for magazines, the trend is to launch online site or version, or blog, also accessible on mobile. This would require support from bloggers too, I suppose. Because they’re now entering the web, previously ‘belongs’ to bloggers.

5. We are one of the most fashionable cities now, do you agree?
I would say that there is a tiny group of people in Singapore that are very stylish, very knowledgable about fashion trends, also the industry as a whole. Those are to me, the ultimate fashionistas. Then there’s also the not-so-stylish people that have the spending power, thus they can buy whatever is seen on the runway, but they don’t have the ‘taste’, the sense of fashion that is detrimental. Then there are people we see on the streets, on public transport, that are those that throw whatever is on top of their wardrobe. These issues are very general. It exists in every kind of society. I don’t agree that Singapore is ready for that title, and if it does, it requires a lot of work and effort to sustain the title.

6. Can you tell us more about your style?
I don’t like to describe myself from my own perspective. At the end of the day, it’s the people that see you on the streets that can form the answer to this particular question. But to me, I can say that my style is effortless. I don’t want it be overdone. Not minimalistic, just that I prefer something clean. I like something that complements my body posture. You see, the trend now is about volume. Those oversize bomber jackets and pants. There are something I wouldn’t wear because of my petite figure. I play with my instincts to decide how to appear stylish, but not necessarily by flaunting labels. No logos, most definitely.

7. Name us some bloggers whom you look up to
Rumi Neely of Fashiontoast, Karla Deras of Karlascloset, Bryanboy of course, and Aimee Song of Song of Style. The only blog about news I read is Business of Fashion, I love Imran Amed I think he’s very intelligent. Just brilliant.

8. Who are your favorite designers?
Alber Elbaz. Oh and Mary Katrantzou and Mary Kate and Ashley for The Row. I do love Victoria Beckham too for her ultra feminine and sleek working dresses. For shoes, I love Christian Louboutin, Nicholas Kirkwood and Brian Atwood.

9. What is a clothing item you can never live without?
My Christian Louboutin New Decoltissimo 100 in black patent. Those are the perfect pointed pumps for every day wear.

10.Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?
I think it’s best to be original. Write in your own voice. If you’re funny then be it. Don’t try to write in a very serious news-y style. If you can be sarcastic then do it. Challenge people. Have something that differentiate yourself from others. My other concern is always choose a clean layout, easy to read. And high-res images. Always avoid anything pixelated. It shows that youre not professional. Finally, do some networking, email other bloggers, comment on their posts, just basically aim to have your link up on their blogs.

RODARTE

When it comes to the new, few are as good as the Mulleavy sisters at delighting the jaded fashion crowed with a different point of view. The Rodarte collections, often inspired by anti-urban settings (e.g. Northern California’s Muir Woods), brought a fresh perspective to hyper-cosmopolitan New York. With the Australian Outback as their starting point, their Fall/Winter 2012 showing is a treasure trove of city-friendly looks that still retains their signature eccentric dreaminess.

PROENZA SCHOULER

With 2012 marking their 10th year in the business, Proenza Schouler is technically not that young anymore. Yet, they continue to possess that rare superpower of always being right on the pulse of cool, thus making them demi-gods to legions of style-conscious young fans who feel that the wonder duo are reading their minds. In other words, they understand youth – and what it desires. You never quite know what Proenza Schouler will come up with each season, but you know it will be good. For Fall/Winter 2012, they plugged into tough girl mode with urban warrior staples, only with a twist (e.g. boxy, oversized biker jackets). To spice it up even more, they added a dose of Orientalism, which not surprisingly, they have made more hip than kitsch.

THE ROW

It seems that Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are destined to become poster girls for whatever they choose to apply their talents to – in this case, celebrities-turn-fashion designers. Advocating an elegant and simple aesthetic that focuses on the fit, cut and construction of the garments, The Row is the high fashion equivalent of a Scandinavian furniture. Carving out a niche for themselves with their emphasis on using only the finest, most luxurious materials, they created a new, intriguing minimalist-maximalist style. Sticking to these principles in Fall/Winter 2012, they created a collection of clean, uncomplicated silhouettes, soothing neutral colours and sensual details. If you calculated based on cost per wear, these timeless pieces are quite a bargain.

Always wonder what do with your old plain looking jeans??
This week’s ‘How To’ Fashion and Beauty share with you how!

I’m sure sometimes when you purchase a pair of jeans from any of your favorite brands, you’ll find that the pretty creases, faded parts or ripped areas may not flatter the shape of your body/legs. And you can’t really do anything about it can you? BUT! If you are to purchase a plain well-fitting pair of jeans, and spend some time making it look awesome at home… your jeans will look one-of-a-kind!

Here’s some simple tools you’ll need:
A Fabric Scissors
Bleach Pen (Clorox Bleach Pens About $5 from Cold Storage)
Pocket Knife
Sand Paper

Have fun experimenting but go easy on your jeans if you intend to keep them for a long long time!
Keep Calm, don’t Stress. And Carry On, distressing those Jeans…

1. Have you always wanted to get into the fashion industry? Can you tell us a little bit of your background?

I was born in Pensacola, Florida, then our family moved to Los Angeles, then from the age of six we moved to Portland, Oregon and I spent my formative years there. When I was eighteen I moved to Seattle, Washington and a year and a half later moved to San Francisco. In 1998 I moved to Europe where I lived in Athens and London. From there I went to Seoul, South Korea then back to the United States. In 2000, I came back to London where I was accepted into the London College of Fashion for their Art and Design course and gained a B-Tech in Art and Design. Then in 2001 I was accepted into Central Saint Martins for BA Fashion and Design. I graduated in 2004 with a First Class Distinction in Fashion Design Womenswear, one of only four in the class do be hounoured with such distinction. In 2005, I was accepted on to the Masters at Central Saint Martins design course, but I had to withdraw due to personal reasons. In 2006, I went back to the United States for eleven months and then came back to Europe, where with my partner, I moved from Italy to London a year later. It wasn’t until June of 2010 that I was personally chosen by John Galliano out of three finalists as the winner for the highly coveted Fashion Fringe platform. Prior to that I worked in bespoke tailoring and at Vivienne Westwood.

My father is a sculptor, my mother a seamstress and my sister also works in design. It was only natural that I would do something creative.

2. Has studying at Central Saint Martins helped you in the creation of your label? Do you think a fashion degree is a must to make it in the fashion industry?

Studying at Central Saint Martins allowed me to look at life as a whole rather than a part. It opened my eyes to different cultures and lifestyles. I don’t feel education is a priority for everyone and is ‘a must’, as we are all individuals. Everyone has his or her own path.

3. What are the day-to-day challenges you faced since the start of your label?

I experience challenges with all aspects of the business from managing staff to financials to marketing! As the creative director of Corrie Nielsen Ltd, my responsibility each season is producing a new collection creatively, but I’m also at the helm of a small business and the responsibilities are endless.

4. Besides being chosen by John Galliano as the winner of Fashion Fringe 2010, what are other memorable experiences you have faced since the start of your label?

Having a space on-schedule at London Fashion Week for my seasonal catwalk shows. It’s an honour and a level of showing my work that most people can only dream of.

5. Is there a celebrity that hasn’t yet worn one of your designs that you’d love to see wearing them?

I would love to see Tilda Swinton, Kate Blanchett and Grace Jones in Corrie Nielsen, and any strong-minded women that have a unique identity.

6. What do you think is a piece of clothing every woman should own?

Underwear and a Corrie Nielsen structured frock coat or structured jacket – they look amazing on anyone, and we do bespoke or made-to-measure to ensure perfect fit.

7. How do you go about coming out with new designs and what do you do when you are stumped for ideas?

I am fascinated by history and spend a lot of time researching in libraries and researching National Heritage sites. There is so much history in London. The city has layers upon layers of hidden treasures dating back hundreds of years. The British Library, which houses books that are hundreds of years old is a great source for ideas, and I like to look back at my own family heritage.

8. Do you think social media is important to your business?

Yes! This next generation speaks digital and doesn’t want to be pushed with marketing and advertising. The connected generation wants to feel like they are a part of the conversation, like they are a friend and have direct access – the relationship with the consumer and brands is so important now. 9. In the upcoming seasons, what can we expect from Corrie Nielsen?

I can’t reveal too much, but the upcoming collection for autumn/winter 2012 draws inspiration from my Scottish great, great, great grandfather John S. Burns, who emigrated from Scotland to the United States about the same time as the Revolutionary War, settling in Arkansas. I’m also pulling ideas from the concept of Scottish clans that produced unique hand-woven tartans representing a particular family name, and infusing all with a medieval English and Scottish form of dress. Expect big, bold, structured pieces with high necklines, floor-sweeping capes and a lot of pleating.
